Here's What You Can Expect: A Sample from the Concussion eBook

Here are the 6 key steps to take when you’ve been told by your child’s team personnel that a concussion is suspected. Remember, your actions as a parent will have a significant influence on the recovery experience of your child.

Step 1: Stay Calm

Stay calm, and listen to your team personnel. Pay attention to their insight about the actual incident and the reason they made the safety call on behalf of your child. This information will be used in the next step.

Note: Do not provide medication to your child at this point in time.

Step 2: Set-up a concussion evaluation right away

An early evaluation is important. Avoid delaying this step as early concussions are important to be observed and evaluated. Make sure to note signs you observe as this information will be helpful during the evaluation.

Ideally, this evaluation is completed away from the sporting environment and completed by a medical practitioner.

You are best served to have the person performing the evaluation well versed in concussion assessment and management. Although you will hear from many that “you can’t tell” and “no one knows how long it will take”. There is actually some pretty good information available to assess various aspects of the concussion injury that will give a clear indication of the injury beyond just asking about symptoms.

In addition to reviewing concussion symptoms a physical exam should be completed. This is important to rule out more severe injury (such as brain bleed) and to understand enough about your child or athlete to make a prediction for their recovery.
