Tom Pearson, PhD

Registered Psychologist

Tom has been training and working in the mental health field since 2008. Before moving to Edmonton in 2010, he worked at an inpatient psychiatric unit and a community mental health clinic in BC. After completing a master’s degree through the University of Alberta’s Counselling Psychology Program, he went on to complete his PhD. Seeing an opportunity to integrate his prior experience as an athlete with his training as a psychologist, Tom’s research focused on the psychological impact of imagined sport concussions in university athletes. Tom went on to become a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists.

For the last 15-years, Tom has trained and worked at inpatient and partial hospitalization settings and at various community clinics. These experiences have allowed Tom a chance to support individuals from various walks of life. Specific populations that Tom has worked with includes university students, athletes, and first responders. Tom has primarily worked with young adults and adults, providing individual and group therapy, brief and comprehensive psychological assessments, and consultation.

While Tom provides a range of services in his full-time job at Recovery Alberta, he only provides individual therapy at Isaac Physiotherapy. Through individual therapy, he supports people who are struggling with anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive, and trauma/PTSD symptoms, or are having difficulties with adjusting to life stressors. Tom practices using cognitive-behavioural approaches and has received extra training in evidence-based PTSD (Prolong Exposure and Cognitive Processing) and OCD (Exposure and Response Prevention) therapies. As well, Tom has received training in the Unified Protocol for Emotional Disorders that is focused on helping people become more understanding and accepting of their emotions. Therapy is a personalized and collaborative process and takes various forms depending on the type of support people are hoping for and their available resources.

Currently, Tom is only seeing people who have psychology coverage through their extended benefits or have the financial means to cover the session fee. Tom is not taking clients who are covered by other third-party payers that may include lawyers, short and long-term disability providers, and motor vehicle insurance companies. He is also not taking clients who are connected to WCB due to a work-related injury or are involved in, or foresee involvement in, a litigation process.

Tom is available for late afternoon/evening in-person appointments. If you prefer virtual appointments, there is greater flexibility with appointment times. Tom follows the recommended fee schedule set by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta that is 235.00 per 50-minute appointment. Tom does not provide a sliding fee scale.
